Is Megawatt charging the (only) way to go for CV charging?
Concerns about the time it takes to charge large batteries have led to significant interest in new charging technologies, such as so-called megawatt (MW) chargers capable of delivering 500kW+ to the vehicle. Nonetheless, our analysis suggests that, while such systems will be important for the electrification of long-haul routes, they will represent only a relatively small fraction of the required charging station population.
Low- and medium-speed chargers are adequate for most depot charging, and even at truck stops we expect a mix of charging technologies. Depending on battery size, break times, and route lengths, some trucks will require MW charging power, while 150 to 400kW High Power Charging (HPC) technology will be sufficient for many.
